Hiker rescued near Hiilawe Waterfall on South rim of Waipio Valley

MEDIA RELEASE

Fire/rescue crews responded to an 11:26 a.m. alarm Thursday (April 21) for an injured hiker above Waipio Valley near Hiilawe Waterfall on the Southwest rim.

A 42 year-old man slipped and fell at or near Lalakea Stream/Waterfall causing moderate injuries according to a fire dispatch report. He was able to get himself out of the stream area and waited for rescue crews. Ground personnel and both fire department helicopters responded to search for the injured hiker.

The man was located by the crew of Chopper 2 and airlifted to North Hawaii Community Hospital. The condition of the hiker is unknown.
