The Hawaii Community College Chancellor Search Advisory committee has identified four finalists for the chancellor position of Hawaii Community College.

The finalists will participate in campus visits April 19-20, and will meet with various constituent groups and speak at public forums in Hilo and West Hawaii.

Open forums for all four candidates are:

* Noon-4 p.m. Tuesday, April 19 at Manono campus in Hilo – Kaneikeao (Bldg. 379, Room 1)
* 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, April 20 the West Hawaii campus – culinary courtyard

The four candidates who will be visiting the Hilo and West Hawaii campuses are:

Alex Capdeville

Alexander (Alex) Capdeville is a professor in the adult and higher education graduate program at Montana State University (MSU). Capdeville has also held positions as state supervisor of technical and health education in Montana and North Dakota.

He served as the chancellor of Montana State University-Northern (MSU-Northern), a multi-campus university offering both two- and four-year programs, from 2000 to 2008, and the chief executive officer of the University of Montana-Helena (UM-Helena), a two-year community/technical college, for 22 years.

Capdeville received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Northern Montana College, and his doctorate in higher education administration from Colorado State University.

Open Forums with Capdeville are noon-1 p.m. Tuesday in Hilo and 9-10 a.m. Wednesday in Kona.

Daniel Bain

Daniel A. Bain is president of Independence Community College (ICC), a comprehensive community college located in Southeast Kansas serving more than 2,500 students.

Bain has held positions as director of the Telelearning Services Department at St. Louis Community College (SLCC) in Missouri, a comprehensive community college district with four campuses, three satellite centers, and one district center, with an enrollment of more than 24,000 students.

His administrative responsibility included overseeing 6,400 students and 100 faculty, department chairs and deans. Bain received his bachelor’s degree in speech and dramatic arts/communication from the University of Iowa, his master’s degree in vocational education from East Carolina University, and his doctorate in higher education leadership from University of Missouri in St. Louis.

Open Forums with Bain are 2-3 p.m. Tuesday in Hilo and noon-1 p.m. Wednesday in Kona.

Noreen Yamane

Noreen Yamane is interim chancellor at Hawaii Community College (Hawaii CC), a position she has held since being appointed in July 2010.

Yamane’s senior administrative roles have included Hawaii CC’s interim vice chancellor for academic affairs where she chaired the College Effectiveness Review Committee, overseeing the integration of comprehensive program reviews, budget development, strategic planning and assessment, and the dean of instruction/assistant to the vice chancellor for academic affairs where she led the update and revision of Hawaii CC’s Strategic Plan.

She attended the University of Hawaii at Hilo and completed her bachelor’s degree in education at UH Manoa. She received her master’s degree in education after teaching in the State of Hawaii’s Department of Education intermediate schools and adult continuing education programs.

Yamane has received many awards recognizing her leadership and commitment in higher education, including the National Education Association Chair’s Academy International Exemplary Leadership Award, Aalii Chancellor’s Service Award (from Hawaii CC) and the University of Hawaii’s Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching.

Open Forums with Yamane are 3-4 p.m. Tuesday in Hilo and 11 a.m.-noon Wednesday in Kona.

Kathleen Curphy

Kathleen Curphy has more than 20 years of experience as a two-year college administrator, 11 years of which were spent at the senior level of multi-campus institutions, both rural and urban.

Curphy has served as vice president for customize training, chief academic officer, and most recently, as provost for Minnesota State Community and Technical College that has 13,600 students in 120 career and liberal arts programs. In addition, she has been both a small business owner and a vice president for Accelerated Learning in corporate America.

Curphy received her bachelor’s in education and her master’s in personnel services from the University of Northern Iowa and an education specialist degree in human services with an industrial arts and technology specialty from the University of Central Missouri.

She will graduate with a doctorate in leadership for higher education from Capella University in June 2011. Her doctoral research is focused on the American Association of Community College’s Competencies for Community College Leaders and the community college presidency.

Open Forums with Curphy are 1-2 p.m. Tuesday in Hilo and 10-11 a.m. in Kona.

The public is invited to meet the candidates at the open forum presentations.
