Last chance for Cattle Barons’ Ball tickets

MEDIA RELEASE

The Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows hosts Hawaii’s inaugural Cattle Barons’ Ball, a Western-themed evening benefiting the West Hawaii Chapter of the American Cancer Society 5:30-10 p.m. Saturday, April 16.

The event will feature entertainment, fresh local cuisine, drinks, gaming, various fun competitions and activities, dancing, a live and silent auction and a luminaria ceremony.

Attendees are encouraged to don their boots, jeans and cowboy hats to pay tribute to the Big Island’s paniolo heritage.

Event chairwoman Mary Higgins Colucci said “the Cattle Barons’ Ball is a dedicated party with a purpose, helping to fight back against a disease that has taken too many lives.”

Tickets are $150 and tables of eight or 10 people can also be reserved, Colucci said.

Various items and once-in-a-lifetime experiences will be auctioned off including a private chefs’ dinner for 10 people with celebrity chef and best-selling author, Jonathan Waxman.

Waxman will return to Hawaii for the James Beard Foundation Celebrity Chef dinner in January 2012 and will prepare an dining experience in at The Mauna Lani Bay.

While this is Hawaii’s first Cattle Barons’ Ball, the event dates back nearly four decades starting with a Western-themed Texas barbecue attended by 500 people in 1974.

Since its inception, more than $40 million has been raised for the American Cancer Society in Dallas and the event has spread to various cities across the nation.

“Proceeds of the event will be used to support local patients with a variety of services and to fund research to ultimately find a cure for this disease and eliminate cancer,” Colucci said.

“In 2010, over 700 patients on the Big Island received services such as inter-island airline tickets for travel to treatment facilities, rides to medical appointments, Look Good … Feel Better Make-up Kits, and more. On the Big Island, the American Cancer Society’s offices in Kona and Hilo provide support and education to cancer patients and family members in their local communities,” she said.
