Windy weather continues for the Big Island

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for the Big Island except for the summits areas. A high pressure area North of the islands is producing strong and gusty trade winds.

East winds will be 20-30 mph with frequent gusts of up to 50 mph. These strong and gusty winds will be widespread but will be especially strong in valleys, over ridges and mountain tops where they will accelerate downslope over the Leeward sides of the Big Island.

Falling trees and branches due to the wind can cause localized power outages. Driving tall vehicles can be difficult in the gusty winds so drivers should use caution. Winds can also suddenly appear to change direction when driving through the road cuts in the Waikoloa area of the Queen Kaahumanu Highway.

Due to the high winds a high surf advisory is in effect for East facing shores of the Big Island until 6 p.m. Friday.

Gale warnings are in effect until 6 p.m. today for the Alenuihaha Channel as well as waters South of the Big Island. A small craft advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. for all other Hawaiian waters.
