Two people rescued after clinging to capsized boat for an hour

MEDIA RELEASE

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 10:51 a.m. alarm Thursday (March 24) for a boat in distress 400 yards off-shore Moku Ola (Coconut Island) in Hilo Bay.

A 12-foot aluminum boat had capsized and its two passengers were clinging to its hull in windy, choppy ocean conditions.

The fire department’s Chopper One flew over the scene and deployed two rescue specialists into the water to assist in the airlifting both victims to Moku Ola.

The victims said the boat began taking on water and capsized. After trying to signal for help for approximately one hour a person with binoculars on shore saw them and called for help.

The victims were not injured and the boat was towed to Reed’s Bay by the Fire Department’s rescue boat.
