High surf and wind advisories for the Big Island

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for the Big Island except for summits until 6 p.m. Thursday.

Northeast winds of 20-30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph can be expected through Thursday evening. The winds will be strongest in passes, valleys and over mountain ridges. People driving tall vehicles should use caution while driving. Residents should be prepared for falling trees and branches on power lines which could cause local outages.

There is also a high surf advisory for East facing shores of the Big Island.

The wind generated rough surf is forecast to be 6-9 feet in height. The high surf forecast and a small craft advisory for all Hawaiian waters is expected to last through 6 a.m. Friday.

The rough surf will produce rip currents and localized beach erosion. Visitors to ocean areas should be wary of breaking waves.
