The lava sparked Napau wildfire which started March 5, 2011 from the Kamoamoa Fissure Eruption continues to grow in size. Recent rains have slowed the spread of the fire which is still not contained and is now reported to be 1,833 acres in size.
The National Park Service is concerned about endemic flora and fauna in the area of the wildfire which is located seven miles southeast of the Kilauea Visitor’s Center.
Firefighers from Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, California have joined USDA Forest Service crews along with local firefighters to battle the blaze. Additional personnel are flying in from the mainland this week.
The Chain of Craters road is open although changes in the fire situation could force the closure of roads in the park. The National Weather Service also forecasts gusty trade winds along with drier conditions starting Monday (March 21) which increase vog levels.
