Man killed in ATV crash into stream

MEDIA RELEASE

Fire/rescue crews responded to an 8:09 a.m. alarm Sunday (Jan 30) for a report of an ATV crash which occurred during previous night. The crash occurred approximately 3/4 mile off Piha-Kahuku Road on 1 Lane Road.

Fire dispatch reports that a lone ATV rider was supposed to pick-up a female passenger Saturday night but never arrived for the passenger who kept phoning him throughout the night without answer.

Sunday morning (Jan 30) the passenger, who had waited, investigated the ATV’s path and came upon the cash scene and contacted the Fire Department.

Rescue crews on scene found that the victim drove off an unguarded cement bridge and fell 8-10 feet to a rocky stream bed. The victim was found face down, head submerged in two feet of water in the stream with a leg pinned under the crashed ATV.

The victim’s body was removed and taken to Hilo Medical Center.
