Hiker with compound fracture rescued from lava viewing trail

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 5:30 p.m. alarm for an injured hiker a mile into the lava viewing hiking trail area in Kalapana Friday (Jan 14).

The fire department Chopper One flew in two rescue personnel who found the hiker with a compound fracture to the left ankle and injuries to their face sustained from a fall. After being stabilized by firefighters the patient was air-lifted to a waiting ambulance on Highway 130 near the 22 mile-marker and was transported in stable condition to Hilo Medical Center.

Highway was closed for about 10 minutes for the helicopter to land and transfer the patient to the medic unit.
