As a long time island resident and skateboarder for over 40 years , I am very upset with the controversy over the skatepark at Cooper Center.
Built by a small group of skaters who donated the materials and their time for FREE this park has been ridden by thousands of local as well as non local skaters.
While I don’t know all the details about the problems that have been occurring there I do know that with no other place to hang out in volcano the types of troublemakers who seem to be getting the park shut down will still be hanging out there whether the park is there or not.
Skateparks are often blamed for problems that were happening in their location long before they were built.
If the park is closed down a healthy activity for residents of the area( and the entire island as people came from all over to ride there) will have been taken away giving at risk youth one less choice of activity.
The kids who rode there will be back out on the streets once again at the mercy of traffic and the weather.
In these times of belt tightening it would seem the county should appreciate having a park built from donated wood by skaters who worked for free on the project rather than look at it as a nuisance
Perhaps if the people in charge were more positive and willing to work with the skaters who call the park home than things could be worked out
I can only hope that some kind of agreement can be reached to keep this world class park open as it would be a huge loss to the island if it were closed permanently

What are the, “Maintenance and safety concerns?”

  3. Park Rekker says:

What a shame! Shame Shame Shame on folks that would rather pay someone to do a report to close this place where youth can go to recreate than spend it on repair. A time when folks are working so hard to build skateparks so youth have a safe place & you are tearing them down. Like Richard Austin said, the same folks will be hanging out but now with a lot of extra time on their hands…..what will they be doing now Volcano? There must be another solution……Let’s work it out.

I went back out to the island with my 12 yr old son for a month to visit family. We went to that park every afternoon and I saw nothing but kids of all ages having fun and doing their thing. Sad to hear.

  5. Lance says:

There will be a meeting regarding the skatepark closure on Jan. 31st 6 pm at the coopercenter which is located right next to the skatepark. Please come and support this island treasure.
