Fatal crash closes Highway 190 between Hina Lani Street & Kaloko Drive

Route 190 between Hina Lani Street and Kaiminani Street is closed in both directions due to a traffic accident.

The HAWAII POLICE DEPARTMENT advises motorist to AVOID Route 190 between Hina Lani Street and Kaiminani Street, Kalaoa North Kona, due to a traffic accident.

A traffic accident near Makalapua Road has closed route 190 and will require a detour of traffic.

Suggested alternate route is Queen Kaahumanu Highway, route 19.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 6:28 p.m. alarm Wednesday (Jan 5) for a fatal crash between a man riding a motorcycle and vehicle on Mamalahoa Highway (Hwy 190) near Makalapua Road.

A motorcycle rider in his late 20s to early 30s was thrown down an embankment after his motorcycle first struck the vehicle then a guardrail.

The rider was found after a brief search and was unresponsive. The rider was pronounced dead at Kona Community Hospital after efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

The 33-year-old driver of the vehicle struck by the motorcyclist suffered serious injuries, according to fire dispatch reports, and was also taken to Kona Community Hospital.

Traffic on the highway was closed between Kaloko Drive and Hina Lani Street with traffic being detoured through Old Mamalahoa Highway while police investigated the crash. Traffic was still being diverted after 11 p.m.

The cause of the crash was reported by the Fire Department to be excessive speed.

Police reported Highway 190 open to traffic at 11:21 p.m.
