Kona Community Hospital welcomes first baby of 2011

Jeff Nashion and Rojel Jonithen of Kailua-Kona had their son, Elies Kekoa Harry, at Kona Community Hospital on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011.

Born at 12:25 a.m., his birth time gives him the status of first baby born at the hospital this year. He weighed 7 pounds and 11 ounces and was 19.5 inches tall.

The attending physician was Santad Sira, M.D. attending pediatrician was Mary Palathra, M.D, and baby’s pediatrician is Peter Locatelli, M.D.

Baby Elies’ due date was Dec. 29, and new mother Rojel said, “We didn’t think he was going to be the first baby of the New Year at all. It’s exciting for the entire family.”

KCH nurses and staff celebrated the birth with a presentation of a first baby package for the family. Generous community merchants and individuals who donated gifts include Choice Mart, Floral Expressions by Lisa, Keei Café, Longs Drug Store Keauhou, Oshima Store, Robert Thomas Photography, and Teshima’s Restaurant.

The family also received a beautiful baby basket from Family Support Hawaii that included an island-wide resource directory, a Snugli (a hands-free front baby carrier), a library of books from local 4H clubs, and gifts from the Obstetrics department.

“Our experience at the hospital has been great. They have treated us well and the staff is very nice,” father Jeff said. “We are very happy with the care that we have received.”

Kona Community Hospital has welcomed four generations of newborns into the world and more than 500 babies per year are delivered in the Obstetrics unit.

“We are proud of the care we provide at Kona Community Hospital,” said Sadhika Anderson, Obstetrics Nurse Manager. “Many of the families that we have cared for have had multiple generations born at our hospital. We are a hospital that has a strong history in our community.”
