Two women rescued via helicopter after hike to Pu‘u O‘o vent

Hawaii County’s Chopper One airlifted two lost female hikers out of the rainforest of the Kahaualea Natural Area Reserve in Volcano, Hawaii Tuesday afternoon (Dec 28).

The two women, aged 20 and 31 years-old, had hiked through the rainforest into a clearing near Pu‘u O‘o vent. Upon returning the pair got disoriented and were unable to located the main trail back out in an area dominated by large Hapu‘u Ferns and old growth Ohia trees. The women called 911, both Chopper One and ground units were dispatched at about 3 p.m.

The women were rescued in good health and without injuries from the incident.

    What’s that going to cost these women ? Will they get a bill
    for helicopter services ?

    If you’re going to take a chance on a trail that is clearly marked as “closed” you had better have a clue about where you’re going and hiking in general. The trail is marked with pink and blue ribbons at regular intervals. C’mon ladies.

    Most likely 2 of those so called lava guide experts from Kalapana. The half mile club. Stay away from the real stuff Kalapana novices. Real dangers out there and you best know how to hike in zero visibility. The trail should be open but, anyone needing rescue should be charged. Wish they posted their names.
