HELCO reports fake phone calls going out

Electric utility impersonator making calls

(Hilo, HI) – Hawaii Electric Light Company (HELCO) has received reports that individuals impersonating HELCO employees have been contacting residents and businesses by telephone and asking for personal information. Currently, the company is aware of calls made on the island of Hawaii. The impersonators are telling customers that their electric bill is overdue and must be paid or electric service will be disconnected.

HELCO would like to remind all customers not to provide personal, confidential, or financial information to any unidentified individual.

Hawaii Electric Light Company urges customers to be cautious when responding to

phone calls and to report any suspicious activity to the company or local police.
