MEDIA RELEASE

Enjoy traditional Hawaiian games and celebrate the culture and science of Kahaluu during La Ike Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at the beach park’s main pavilion.

Learn to play Hawaiian games including konane (similar to checkers), hei (string figures), and palaie (played with a loop and ball); discover the important role they played in Hawaiian culture and why they are still enjoyed today.

The celebration also includes ono food, Hawaiian music and entertainment, fresh lei making with Aunty Mele Waikiki, and coconut weaving with Kumu Sam Kama.

The Kahaluu ReefTeach team will share information about the importance of coral reefs to our island way of life.

This La Ike Day at Kahaluu Bay is presented by The Kohala Center and the National Park Service and is sponsored by the Hawaii Tourism Authority.
