GEMS slated for Nov. 18

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) each year offers the GEMS (Girls Exploring Math and Science) Program for fifth grade girls on the west side of the Big Island.

This year the GEMS Program is Thursday, Nov. 18, at the Keauhou Outrigger Beach Resort. About 280 girls are expected to attend.

The goal of GEMS is to expand the girls’ awareness of career possibilities and encourage them to see the importance of education or encourage them to attend college.

Each girl chooses three workshops:
* Dig into the Past with MaryAnne Maigret, Archaeologist, National Park Service;
* Susan Cox and Mariah Hardt, Create Your Green Power Girl Avatar with Green Power Girl, Environmental Educational Services;
* Coral Reef Critters with Sara Peck and Victoria Newman, UH Sea Grant Extension Service, West Hawaii;
* Be a Water Quality and Coral Reef Scientist with Samantha Birch and Caroline Neary;
* Malama Kai: Taking Care of our Ocean with The Kohala Center, Laura Livnat, Kara Osada, and Camille Barnett, DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources Kona;
* Dale Ishida Suezaki, Financial Advisor, Morgan Stanley;
* Beth Jose, Veterinarian, and Rebecca Dewhirst, Alii Veterinary Hospital;
* Carol Zee, President, West Hawaii Technical Services (formerly satellite system developer for NOAA & NASA);
* Jean Hull, American Culinary Federation, Simone White, Hawaii Community College, and Karen Carrier ACF Chef & Child Program, Kona Kohala Chapter;
* Exploring Rainbows: Light and the Universe, Nadine Manset, Resident Astronomer, Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope;
* Creative Computer Programming with Liz Chock and Myrna Tsubota, Software Engineers, W.M. Keck Observatory;
* Smile! How to Keep a Healthy Smile with Dr. Leesa Miyasato and Staff: Ashlei McTrusty, Paula Ferreira, Danori Mokuahi, Tiffany Mowatt, from Waimea Smiles;
* Teamwork in Emergency Healthcare with Robin Seto, MD, Kaiser internist and Kona Community Hospital medical staff member, and Lori Cannon, ER nurse, Kona Community Hospital and certified flight nurse;
* Cosmetics and Kitchen Chemistry with Barbara Zazzi, M.S., Professor, Hawaii Community College;
* Discovering the Isle of Gems: The basics of Land Surveying with Chrystal Thomas Yamasaki, Surveyor, and Kimberly Yamasaki, Wes Thomas and Associates,
* Girls in Space: How to be an Astronaut with Judy Ann Williams, Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist, Representing Civil Air Patrol Aerospace Education, Cadet Program;
* Nature x Design + Construction= Architecture with Kari Kimura, AIA, Partner of Roth Kimura, LLP;
* Underwater Adventure with Chrissy Dupuis, Professional Scuba Instructor, Jack’s Diving Locker;
* Bones, Body Parts and Bugs with Emily Mendez-Bryant, Community Relations, Kona Community Hospital;
* The Doctor Will See You Now – Being a veterinarian with Jolene Head, Veterinary Nurse and Owner of Keauhou Veterinary Hospital and Stacia Goecke, Educational Coordinator

Scheduled exhibitors include:
* Nancy Tashima, Astronaut Ellison S. Onizuka Space Center;
* Kate Jacobson and Amber Aguirre with their Science of Beauty;
* Angela Kang, Recycling Specialist, County of Hawaii;
* Betty Baker, Pharmacist, Keauhou Long’s Drug;
* WHEA (West Hawaii Explorations Academy) with some students’ science projects;
* “Hit a Home Run for Nutrition” breakfast thanks to Jean Hull and the American Culinary Federation Chef and Child foundation’s Child Hunger Day Event.
* Laura Dierenfield, Executive Director, PATH – Peoples Advocacy for Trails Hawaii, will be using pedal power to create smoothies for the girls’ breakfast.
