Police warn about possible telephone scam

MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police are warning the public about a possible telephone scam.

A Mountain View woman reported that an unidentified woman with what sounded like a southern accent called her cell phone from a blocked number and claimed that her phone service would be shut off due to an outstanding bill. The caller, who did not disclose what company she supposedly represented, solicited payment over the phone.

The caller hung up after the Mountain View woman informed her that she was checking her account on line and everything appeared to be in order.

Police advise the public never to give credit card information over the phone without verifying that the call is legitimate.
