DUI stats for the week of October 4-10

During the week of October 4, 2010, through October 10, 2010, Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 1,198 DUI arrests compared with 1,062 during the same period last year, an increase of 12.8 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,070 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,215 during the same period last year, a decrease of 11.9 percent.

So far this year, there were 22 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 19 during the same period last year, an increase of 15.8 percent.

To date, 20 fatalities this year were related to drugs (11), alcohol (10) or a combination of both (6 of the 20).

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
