The final score was 4-0 in favor of the University of Hawaii at Hilo yet the more noticeable numbers on the stat sheets were the 20 fouls by the Vulcans in their win over the Academy of Art University.

“After coming off that road trip it was pretty apparent that the physical style of play being played on the mainland we weren’t ready for it,” said UHH head coach Marc Miranda. “So when we came back, we adjusted and from there the girls responded accordingly.

“This is probably how this team is going to start looking more to be more physical from the get go. We just don’t want to be the victim. And if you’re going to look for the referee to bail you out, you’re not going to find it.”

The Vulcans are 3-6-1 overall and 2-4 in the PacWest while the Urban Knights are 1-7-1 overall and 0-7 in the conference.

Emily Lambert nailed a shot from over 30-yards out with 37:47 expired on the clock to put the Vulcans up 1-0. A few minutes later, Shea Nakamoto scored on a scramble on a loose corner kick near the goal.

“That was a cracker and Emily’s been out most of the week with an injury,” said Miranda. “You don’t have to score pretty. As long as it goes in the back of the net, it counts as one.”

With the ball in their possession to start the second half, the Vulcans quickly scored another goal on a crossing pass from Emily Cadiz to Lauren Minami with only a minute off the clock.

“I’m more excited about the way we came out in the second half and scored that opening goal,” said Miranda. “It became evident that we need to close that match out.

“Dominican, they came out and were nonchalant. They had a 2-0 lead on us and we came back and took it to them. We began to impose our will them so they lost control of it. What the girls saw there, they brought it back here and said that’s not going to happen to us.”

Analysa Rodriguez added the final score on another scramble but this time off of a goalie save.
