Big Island police are investigating a burglary in which military and presidential coins with high sentimental value were among the items stolen.

An 82-year-old Pepe’ekeo man reported that the items were taken from his apartment sometime between 10:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Tuesday (September 28). A witness saw a suspicious male teenager or young adult in the area between 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. He was wearing a yellow T-shirt.

The items taken included a gold Marine Corps coin commemorating the Battle of Iwo Jima, a coin with the presidential seal and the words “Republican Presidential Task Force,” a gold-plated Marine Corps ring, a gold ring with jade, two gold rings with cubic zirconia stones and large quantities of loose change.

Police ask that anyone who sees any of the stolen items or who has any information about the case call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. All Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.

The headline is kind of misleading – the coins at least aren’t particularly rare, you can buy them on eBay for $10-20 for the Task Force one and $2-10 for the Iwo Jima one. Of course that only makes it more shameful – these scumbags stealing stuff from an old man that he cares about but isn’t even worth much in cash.
