Federal funding for buses, transit enhancement projects

MEDIA RELEASE

Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono has announced the awarding of a $5,699,400 U.S. Department of Transportation grant to purchase new buses in the counties of Hawaii, Kauai, and Maui. The funding will also be utilized to further enhance the transit system on the island of Kauai.

This grant, awarded through the Federal Transit Administration, will allow

* The County of Hawaii to purchase four (4) 49-passenger buses for islandwide transportation services.

* The County of Maui to purchase double-deck buses to support growing demand for services.

* The County of Kauai to purchase eight (8) replacement buses and begin work to enhance its transit system by improving bus stops, the administrative facility, as well as upgrade bus scheduling and dispatching software.

Hirono represents Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, which includes rural Oahu, the Neighbor Islands: Kahoolawe, Kauai, Lanai, Maui, Molokai, Niihau, Hawaii Island and the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.

Hirono is a member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.
