Woman may have drowned in Kona hotel pool

MEDIA RELEASE, 3:15 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24

Emergency crews responded to a report of a possible drowning Monday evening at the King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel swimming pool.

The alarm was sounded shortly after 8:30 p.m. and when emergency crews arrived, the woman had been removed from the pool.

Fire crews reported the woman was found in the pool in cardiac arrest. Although crews attempted CPR, the woman was pronounced dead at Kona Community Hospital.

The incident was listed as a possible drowning, pending further investigation.

UPDATE, 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24

On Aug. 23, at approximately 8:45 p.m., Kona police responded to a report of a possible drowning in a pool at a Kailua-Kona hotel.

Upon arrival, bystanders were administering CPR to a 54-year-old female who had been pulled unresponsive from the bottom of a pool.

The female was transported to the Kona Community Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 9:16 p.m. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of the next of kin.
