14 North Hawaii groups invite voters to a non-partisan candidate forum Thursday (Aug 12)

MEDIA RELEASE

The outcome of the coming Primary and General Elections will have a huge impact on the future of Waimea and all of the 50th State.

This is the message Waimea Community Association and 13 other community partners want to convey to voters in the North Hawaii – and it’s why these organizations have banded together to co-sponsor a Non-Partisan Candidate Forum at 5:15 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 12 at Waimea School Cafeteria.

The forum will be moderated by LAVAFM, KKOA and KHPR newswoman Sherry Bracken.

There is no charge and everyone in the community is invited.

Joining Waimea Community Association in sponsoring the gathering are Tutu’s House / Friends of the Future, North Hawaii Rotary, North Hawaii Community Hospital, Waimea Hawaiian Homesteaders Association, Waimea Hawaiian Civic Club, Friends of Thelma Parker Memorial Library, Big Island Invasive Species Committee, Baby Steps to Stronger Big Island Families (an early childhood advocacy group), Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce, People’s Advocacy for Trails Hawaii (PATH), Hawaii Fishing & Boating Association, The Kohala Center, Waimea Middle Public Conversion Charter School and South Kohala Traffic Safety Committee.

The Primary Election is Saturday, Sept. 18 and General Election is Tuesday, Nov. 2.

All candidates for the five key races impacting North Hawaii voters have been invited, including:
County Council District 1 (Seat currently held by Dominic Yagong)
County Council District 9 (Seat currently held by Pete Hoffmann)
State House District 7 (Seat currently held by Cindy Evans)
Governor’s Race

Questions may be emailed by Wednesday, Aug. 11, to Susan Maddox at future@flex.com. Or, bring your question to the forum that evening.

Maddox heads up a Questions Panel for the forum that includes John Ray, Kanani Kapuniai, Malama Solomon, Rory Flynn and Riley Smith. This group also has consulted with Waimea Community Association members as well as leaders of 13 other community organizations that are co-hosting the forum to develop a long list of questions addressing wide-ranging, from education, energy and planning to early childhood, senior services, solid waste management and sustainable agriculture.

All Hawaii Island residents are invited and there is no charge though everyone attending WCA Town Meetings is asked to contribute to an ongoing drive to support Waimea food pantries — either with a cash donation or by bringing non-perishable food donations.

Healthy snacks will be provided by the co-sponsors along with complimentary coffee provided by Starbucks-Waimea.
