Kona Brewing Co. introduces ‘Firkin Friday’ (Aug. 6)

MEDIA RELEASE

Kona Brewing Company’s brewstaff has declared every other Friday of the month “Firkin Friday.”

Twice a month the Kailua-Kona pub taps up a special firkin of one-of-a-kind connoisseur beer at 5 p.m. and serves the tasty concoction until it runs dry – sometimes the firkin lasts all evening, sometimes it is gone in just an hour!

A firkin, also called a cask, is a 10.8-gallon keg of beer. Typically, the brewers pull off a keg of one of Kona Brewing Company’s mainstay beers as it is conditioning in the tank, “pitch” it with a dose of live yeast and add a unique ingredient or two.

As the flavor develops during weeks of conditioning, so does a gentle, natural carbonation. The beer is served straight from the firkin, slightly warmer and less carbonated than other beers on tap, in true English pub style.

This Friday, try a pint of “Gingerlililicious” – Big Island Ginger Ale that has been cask conditioned with fresh lilikoi puree.

Mark your calendar for the next Firkin Friday, Aug. 20. The brewers are working on a “Firkin Hot” beer – a volcanic mix of Lavaman Red Ale and Black Sand Porter, cask conditioned with fresh Hawaiian chili peppers.
