Kona Community Hospital (KCH) and Ke Ānuenue  Area Health Education Center (AHEC) hosted their fourth M.A.S.H. (Medical Academy of Science and Health) Camp on July 19 and 20 at Kona Community Hospital.  Four years ago, marked the first M.A.S.H. Camp for the state of Hawaii, and now with its sucess, has grown to other neighbor islands.

Hawaiian Isle Athletics (HIA) Youth Baseball fielded several kids from Parker School for their Mustang Division (ages 9 and 10) of PONY League Baseball in Kona.  Players included Connor Brown, Braedon Ingalls, Noah Dizol, Ian Owens, Madilyn Jardine, and Taylor Sullivan.  They had an undefeated season (12-0) against Kohala and Kona and most made the Kona PONY Mustang Allstar team.  Braedon Ingalls was considered the most improved player by all HIA coaches.

The American Cancer Society has received a $5,000 grant from Hawaii Electric Light Company (HELCO) to support its Relay for Life events on the Big Island.

“HELCO is very proud to be able to support such an important community event,” said HELCO President Jay Ignacio. “Relay for Life not only educates participants on cancer prevention and wellness. It also brings our community together in the spirit of giving, hope, and remembrance.”

Big Island police are asking for the public's help in providing information about a hit-and-run accident Tuesday (July 27) in Hilo.

The accident took place at the intersection of Ululani Street and Ponahawai Street around 12:30 p.m. A 15-year-old boy was crossing Ponahawai Street heading north when a black pickup truck traveling west on Ponahawai struck him and left the scene.

The Hawai'i Police Department is reminding the public that some areas along Kalaniana'ole Avenue in Keaukaha are designated "No Parking" zones. Those areas are designed to allow emergency vehicles access to assist the public.

With the summer season and sunny weather, the number of beach goers is expected to increase, leading to a potential parking shortage. Police ask the public to exercise caution and not park on the roadways or where posted signs prohibit it. Officers will continue to issue citations to ensure the safety of our community

Big Island police are investigating an assault last month in Hilo.

On June 20, shortly before 4 a.m., police received a report of an injured man near a drinking establishment on Banyan Drive. Police determined that the 24-year-old visitor from Texas had been at the establishment and had been assaulted either going to or returning from the restroom. He sustained facial injuries that required surgery. After his release from Oahu, where he received medical treatment, he returned to Texas.

Oceanic Time Warner Cable services experienced an outage statewide in Hawaii just before midnight Monday (July 26).

The outage affects both their high speed internet services and home telephone services. Oceanic asks that customers do not reboot their cable modem boxes at this time and that they have crews working on the problem.

There is no estimate on when service will be restored. For an update on the system status in Hawaii call (808) 625-8282

After a five-year hiatus, the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Vulcan Hall of Fame returns with a September 4th awards luncheon to give long over-due honors to three remarkable persons: the Vulcans' most victorious volleyball coach, a memorable basketball point guard and a softball marvel.

Former UH Hilo Volleyball Coach Sharon Peterson, point guard Mark Lovelace and catcher Melanie Hipwell will be inducted into the UH Hilo Athletic Vulcan Hall of Fame in a noon luncheon ceremony at the UHH Campus Center.  Doors will open at 11:30 am.

Fire/rescue crews responded to a 4:28 p.m. alarm Monday (July 26) to the intersection of Wailoa Street and Ululani Street for a structure fire.

Crews found a two-story vacant, abandoned structure 75% engulfed in flames. Firefighters had to make their way through a surrounding chain link fence to access the fire scene. Heavy fire damage was reported in two units on the second floor.

Xanthin Berdon, 20, of Hawaiian Beaches is described as Hawaiian, 5-foot-9, about 135 pounds with brown eyes and black hair.

Chief Harry S. Kubojiri has promoted two Police Department employees to the rank of captain, effective August 1.

Robert Wagner will be commander of South Hilo Patrol and Samuel Kawamoto will command Kona Patrol.

Wagner, a 24-year veteran of the Hawai'i Police Department, is a former Criminal Investigations Section lieutenant in Kona. He now heads the Police Department's ongoing efforts to achieve accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. He was born and raised in Hilo, where he still lives.

Hawaii County fire/rescue crews from Honokaa responded to a 4:45 p.m. alarm Sunday (July 25) for a brushfire near Keanakolu and Mana Roads mauka of Umikoa Village.

Crews found two acres of pasture land with a few scattered trees burning. The fire started along Keanakolu and Mana Road approximately 15 miles from the Saddle Road access and five miles mauka of Umikoa Village in Kukaiau Ranch.

Average retail gasoline prices in Hawaii have risen 5.0 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.48/g yesterday. This compares with the national average that has increased 2.4 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.74/g, according to gasoline price website HawaiiGasPrices.com.
