Police investigating June assault in Hilo

MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police are investigating an assault last month in Hilo.

On June 20, shortly before 4 a.m., police received a report of an injured man near a drinking establishment on Banyan Drive. Police determined that the 24-year-old visitor from Texas had been at the establishment and had been assaulted either going to or returning from the restroom. He sustained facial injuries that required surgery. After his release from Oahu, where he received medical treatment, he returned to Texas.

Although several patrons discovered the injured victim at the scene, no witnesses came forward to disclose any information to police.

Police ask that anyone who witnessed the assault or who can help identify the suspect or suspects call Officer Christopher Kapua-Allison at 961-2316 or the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. All Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.
