Brushfire burns ranch land on northeast slope of Mauna Kea

Hawaii County fire/rescue crews from Honokaa responded to a 4:45 p.m. alarm Sunday (July 25) for a brushfire near Keanakolu and Mana Roads mauka of Umikoa Village.

Crews found two acres of pasture land with a few scattered trees burning. The fire started along Keanakolu and Mana Road approximately 15 miles from the Saddle Road access and five miles mauka of Umikoa Village in Kukaiau Ranch.

Crews consisted of County firefighters, volunteer firefighters with private bulldozers cutting fire breaks and Chopper One to perform water drops. It took crews about two hours to have the fire under control. The last crews got back to their stations at 2 a.m. Monday (July 26).

There were no injuries reported and no structures threatened in this open ranch land fire on the northeast slope of Mauna Kea. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.
