Big Island earns big awards this summer

MEDIA RELEASE

Summer is off to a hot start for Hawai’i’s Big Island!

To kick things off, readers of Travel + Leisure magazine voted the Island of Hawaii as one of the Top 10 Islands in the World – making the 15th annual World’s Best Islands list along with Maui and Kauai in the magazine’s August 2010 issue.

In the same issue, Travel + Leisure readers voted the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai as Hawaii’s No. 1 resort and No. 1 spa resort by region.

Three other Big Island resorts made the same Top 25 list: Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows (7), Mauna Kea Beach Hotel (12) and Kona Village (19).

ISLANDS magazine in its August issue names the Big Island No. 1 on its “Top 20 Best Islands to Live On” annual round-up. The magazine features testimony from several local residents, and states that Hawaii Island is “great for everyone” and has “small towns, big towns, hot weather, cool weather, primary schools, universities, golf, surf, volcanoes – the Big Island has it all.”

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park – Hawaii’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site – was also voted as Hawaii’s No. 1 natural wonder by fans of Hawaii magazine on social media giant, Facebook.

“This recent recognition establishes what those of us who live here already know: that Hawaii’s Big Island is an incredible place to visit, to live, and to explore,” said George Applegate, executive director of the Big Island Visitors Bureau.

Last month, Conde Nast Traveler magazine published results of its 14th Readers Choice Survey for Top Golf Resorts. Six courses on the Big Island, widely recognized as Hawaii’s Golf Capitol, made the Top 15 Hawaii Golf Resorts: Four Seasons Resort Hualalai (2), The Fairmont Orchid (7), Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows (8), Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel (13), Mauna Kea Beach Hotel (14), and Hilton Waikoloa Village (15).
