Brushfire closes Mamalahoa Highway (Hwy 190) Monday (July 5)

UPDATE, 6:50 p.m.

Hawaii County Police reports that Highway 190 (Mamalahoa Highway) is now open to traffic. Motorists should use caution as there may still be fire equipment on the roadway.

UPDATE, 4:07 p.m.

Hawaii County Police reports that Highway 190 remains closed from Waikoloa Road to Kaiminani Drive due to a brush fire and urges motorists to use Queen Kaahumanu Highway.

Fire crews have been battling a wildfire on the makai side of Highway 190 (Mamalahoa Highway) near the 27 mile marker.

The road remains closed as of 3:30 p.m. and the fire has consumed about 500 acres of open land owned by the county and Hualalai Development.

In addition to four county vehicles, a county water tender is shuttling in water and at least two privately owned bulldozers are working on a firebreak and perimeter.

Both county helicopters are making water drops on inaccessible areas.

The fire was reported shortly before midnight. The cause is unknown.

No injuries have ben reported.
