Firefighers were kept busy in East Hawaii Sunday night (June 20) with car crashes and a fire in Honomu.

An SUV crashed onto its side about about 8 p.m. on the Honokaa side of Kaawalii Gulch Sunday night. As a flatbed tow-truck was idling in the Honokaa bound lane at the scene a car crashed into the back of the stopped tow-truck.

The crashes blocked the makai lane of the Highway 11 as police and fire crews worked on the accident scene. Later the mauka lane was opened to one way traffic.

In the Honomu area just after 9 p.m. a structure fire engulfed a home in the gulch on the Hilo side of Honomu. Firefighters had the blaze under control by 10:05 p.m. and reported it out at 11:40 p.m.

There were no injuries reported in the fire with the loss estimated to be $120,000.

Directly across from the fire on Old Mamalahoa Highway a large tree had collapsed and created a landslide of debris which crossed the highaway and slid into the property area of the home. The roadway as impassible and country crews were dispatched to clear the debris.

It is unknown at this time if the landslide is related to the structure fire.

Earlier in the evening crews responded to a fatal crash in Ka‘u. See related post.
