Waimea ‘Call to Action’ meeting for Anuenue Playground Thursday (June 3)

MEDIA RELEASE

Waimea ‘Call To Action’ Meeting To Save Anuenue Playground & Improve Waimea Park This Thurs., June 3, 2010

The safety of keiki – and preserving their enjoyment of Waimea’s popular Anuenue Playground – will be the focus of a special “Call To Action” Town Meeting at 5:15 p.m., Thurs., June 3, 2010 at Parker School.

Organized by Waimea Community Association in partnership with Waimea Preservation Association and Waimea Outdoor Circle, the meeting will include a walking inspection of Anuenue Playground and Waimea Park. Immediately thereafter will be a historical overview of how the beloved playground was created and funded entirely by the community almost 20 years ago, and what needs to be done now and on a continuing basis to keep it safe and prevent forced closure.

Everyone is invited and there is no charge though everyone is encouraged to bring a food donation for Waimea pantries (either a check or non-perishable items), and also a contribution to potluck snacks. Starbucks’ Waimea store provides fresh hot coffee for all WCA Town Meetings.

Hawai’i County Parks & Recreation Director Bob Fitzgerald will participate in the meeting and there will be a slide show reminiscing about how Anuenue Playground came into being through a series of community-led fundraisers and work days.

Weather and time have since taken a toll and many aspects of the playground are no longer safe. Also, many other features in Waimea Park need repair and ongoing maintenance or replacement including general landscaping.

“All of Waimea is urged to come to the meeting to learn about what they can do to help restore the playground and/or replace various features,” said WCA’s volunteer president Sherman Warner.

“There’s something here that most everyone can help with – from power washing and sanding, to helping with dollar-by-dollar fundraising, to helping paint or weed or assist with grant writing or building and running a phone or email tree – or helping create a Facebook page!”

For information, call Sherman Warner (885-1725) or email: shermw@hawaiiantel.net. Or go to www.WaimeaTown.org.
