Lt. Governor Duke Aiona today urged non-profits across the state to enroll in the 2010 Summer Youth Employment Program and receive help from young workers immediately through Sep. 30. Already, Lt. The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) is soliciting entries for its second annual dive flag giveaway.  The summer event is designed to raise awareness in Hawai‘i’s ocean recreation community of the importance of using and watching out for dive flags in the water.

The department will be giving away one dive flag a week during the summer months of June, July and August. Each flag meets State requirements.

On Friday, May 28, at approximately 7:15 am, park rangers responded to a single car accident near mile marker 34 on Highway 11.

The driver, Edmund Carl Serrao (48) of Hilo was pronounced dead at the scene.

His passenger, Kelsey Kelsom (19) of Hilo was transported to Hilo Medical Center by Hawaii County Fire Rescue.

The Hawai'i Island Police Activities League (HI-PAL) will hold a summer basketball league for boys and girls aged 11-18.

The event will run from June 17 through June 29 at an East Hawai'i facility that has not yet been determined. Participants will be divided into three age categories: 11-12, 13-14 and 15-18. A schedule of games will be provided before the first set of games.

Pacific Ocean shoreline protection, resource management, ocean pollution and tsunami response are among the topics to be presented during the five-day Pacific Congress on Marine Science and Technology: PACON 2010 International Conference on the campus of UH Hilo.
 
According to Judith Fox-Goldstein, UH Hilo Conference Center director, "More than 150 national and international marine scientists, engineers and policy makers will be in attendance."
