UPDATED MEDIA RELEASE (5/23/10 11:25 a.m.)

A 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy are dead following a three-vehicle crash late Saturday on the Palani Road that may have involved racing.

The accident happened about 11:53 p.m., when a 1997 Honda two-door sedan driven by the 20-year-old was traveling east on Palani Road and possibly racing with another vehicle when it lost control, crossed the centerline and hit a 2006 Toyota multi-purpose vehicle head-on approximately 1/4 mile makai of Kealakaa Street at the double lanes.

The Honda continued sliding across the west-bound lane and hit a 2007 Chrysler four-door sedan also traveling west.

The driver of the Honda was identified as Kyle R. Buckley, 20, of Kealakekua. He was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:40 a.m.

The 16-year-old boy, the Honda’s passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was withheld pending notification of his family.

The driver of the Toyota, a 25-year-old man from Oahu, and his passengers, a 21-year-old man, a 3-year-old boy and a 1-year-old boy, were treated and released from the hospital.

The driver of the Chrysler, a 23-year-old woman from Kailua-Kona, and her passenger, a 23-year-old woman from Oahu, were also treated and released.

Palani Road was closed while authorities conducted their investigation and was reported open by police at 6:19 a.m. Sunday, May 23. Traffic was diverted to Hina Lani Street.

Police are investigating the crash. It’s unknown if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash, but police said “speed was definitely a factor.”

Police have initiated a negligent homicide case and ordered a coroner’s inquest to establish the exact case of death in both cases.

Anyone with information, especially anyone who might know the identity of the driver of the second racing car, is urged to call Office Joshua Lewis at 326-4646 x229.

It was the 11th and 12th fatalities on the Big Island so far this week, compared to seven last year.
