FSSWH receives OHA grant for fatherhood initiative

MEDIA RELEASE

Family Support Services of West Hawaii (FSSWH) has been awarded a $57,500 grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs to support Na Makuakane Maikai O Hawaii — Great Fathers of Hawaii.

This Hawaii Island Fatherhood Initiative was designed to increase father involvement in the lives of children and promote responsible fathering practices. This fills a gap that has been missing for decades in Hawaii’s social service network. Fathers are an overlooked resource that needs attention in the healing of our communities’ problems.

The Fatherhood Initiative assists fathers, fathers-to-be and potential dads with educational support and teaching techniques by providing direct services, classes, group meetings and family activities using the Hawaiian values system.

The program is based on the Native Hawaiian concept of Ohana which acknowledges the spiritual, emotional and physical responsibilities of a family and its relationship to community. The program strengthens the role of the father in the household and with his children by introducing the values of Kuleana, Haahaa, Lokomaikai, Malama and Lokahi.

Kauila Ho, one of Na Makuakane’s father facilitators, said, “In Hawaiian society, one is expected to know and understand what it means to be a contributing member of the community. Everyone has a responsibility to use their talents to benefit the entire ohana. In ancient times, the men were the nurturers, cooks, teachers, and counselors. We promote this understanding with great humility to our fathers and men, supporting tremendous respect for our wives — daughters who carry the blessing of birthing. It’s a duty and opportunity as kane to connect to our sensitive side in order to appeal to our children and loved ones.”

Family Support Services’ mission is “to support families and communities in providing love and care for our children.” The organization was established in 1979 by community volunteers who were concerned for the well-being of our island’s children.

“OHA is pleased to continue its support for nonprofit community groups who work to make a difference in the lives of Native Hawaiians in the midst of a struggling economy,” said OHA Chairperson Haunani Apoliona.

In selecting grant recipients, the OHA Board of Trustees gave full consideration to projects that would ensure that Native Hawaiians have continued opportunities in health care, human services, education, housing, economic development, native rights and cultural preservation.
