State courts commemorate Law Day in Hilo (May 5)

In celebration of National Law Day on May 1, the Hawaii State Judiciary is sponsoring public free programs at courthouses in Hilo, Honolulu and Lihue during the first week in May.

On the Big Island on Wednesday, May 5, together with the Hawaii County Bar Association, the Third Circuit is hosting a “Legal Services in Hawaii Seminar” noon-1 p.m. at Hale Kaulike, 777 Kilauea Avenue, the Jury Assembly Room on the first floor.

The topics are geared for persons who may not be able to afford an attorney and will include family law, legal information and referrals, landlord and tenant rights, mediation services, and what to do if you are a victim of crime.

Speaking will be representatives from the Child Support Enforcement Agency, Volunteer Legal Services Hawaii, the Hawaii Legal Aid Society, the Kuakahi Mediation Center, and the Victim’s Assistance Unit from the Hawaii County Prosecutor’s Office.

On Oahu on Thursday, May 6, court staff at the Kapolei Court Complex will be showing a video depicting the role of a juror 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The court complex is located at 4675 Kapolei Parkway across from Costco.

On Kauai on Thursday, May 6, public tours of the Kauai court complex at 3970 Kaana Street will be conducted from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Judges Raffetto and Ibarra host students

Also during the week of April 26, in commemoration of Law Day, Second Circuit Chief Judge Shackley Raffetto hosted students from Lihikai Elementary and Maui High Schools and Third Circuit Chief Judge Ronald Ibarra held a question and answer session with students from Kealakekhe and Konawaena schools in their respective courtrooms.
