Aiona on launch of the National Physical Activity Plan

MEDIA RELEASE

Lt. Gov. James “Duke” Aiona has issued the following statement regarding the launch of The National Physical Activity Plan:

“I applaud the launch of The National Physical Activity Plan to improve public health in every community.

“Since unveiling The Hawaii Physical Activity and Nutrition Plan in 2007, many of the plan’s recommendations have been and continue to be implemented. These include: increasing the engagement of healthcare providers in health promotion; implementing the Wellness Guidelines in schools; training teachers on standards based physical education; and increasing support for physical activity and healthful nutrition in Hawaii communities.

“Worksite wellness can create large-scale improvements in the health of workers and show a return on investment for Hawaii businesses.

“By coordinating with state and national stakeholders, we have a great opportunity to motivate our adults and youth to improve their quality of life and reduce the economic burdens of preventable and chronic diseases.”

At least 12 states, including Hawaii, and a number of other countries have enacted physical activity plans, establishing best practices for making physical activity a routine part of daily life.
