Due to a change of management at Safeway in Kailua-Kona, Cop On Top, an annual fundraiser for Special Olympics West Hawaii, will now be held in the Spring instead of in the Fall.

The event will start at 6 a.m. Thursday, April 29, and conclude in the afternoon of Saturday, May 1. During those three days, local police officers will live on scaffolding in front of Safeway on Henry Street, rallying support and dropping buckets below to those passing by for donations to SOWH.

A 22-year-old Ka'u man died Wednesday (April 28) from injuries he sustained in a two-vehicle crash on Route 11, .2 miles north of the 57-mile marker in the Hilea area of the Ka'u District.

The victim was identified as James P.K. Akau of an Ocean View address.

The buoyancy compensator seal ring could crack, posing a drowning hazard to divers. This recall involves buoyancy compensators with the following model numbers. Buoyancy compensators provide buoyancy control for scuba divers by allowing them to inflate or deflate the devices. The compensators were sold in black or red. “OMS” is printed on the front inside of the compensators. Item and serial numbers are printed on the warning label located in the non-inflation area of the buoyancy compensator.

Mayor Billy Kenoi today said he is disappointed that Japan Air Lines has decided to halt direct-flight service from Narita to Kona, but said that he is convening a special meeting between the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority, the County, the State Tourism Liaison and other major stakeholders such as the hotels and tour wholesale companies to pursue a strategy to respond to the flight suspension.
