Dear Hawaii Wildlife Center supporter:

Thanks to you, 2010 looks like it will be the year that the HWC will open its long-awaited wildlife treatment, recovery, and educational facility! Despite a serious economic recession and a staff of mostly volunteers, we have managed to reach an impressive 84 percent of our capital campaign goal.

This would not have been possible without you and other enthusiastic supporters, who have donated thousands of hours of time, generous financial resources, valuable donated and discounted building materials, and heartwarming community support. We are so very close to being fully operational, but only with your renewed support will we reach this goal.

The Hawaii Wildlife Center, a 501(c)(3) conservation organization, was established in 2006 to provide a fully equipped native wildlife rehabilitation and recovery facility, long sought by island wildlife biologists and conservationists. Sadly, time has not stood still while we worked to design, build, and raise funds and public interest for this critical facility, and every day the plight of Hawaii’s endangered birds has deteriorated further.

As you may know, Hawaii holds the unfortunate distinction as the endangered species capital of the world; there are more endangered species per square mile on these islands than any other place on earth!

In February 2007, the American Bird Conservancy and the Audubon Society jointly declared that the forests of the Hawaiian Islands are the most threatened bird habitat in the United States. The State of the Birds 2010 Report on Climate Change states 93 percent of Hawaiian birds are at medium to high vulnerability. We have seven of the 10 most endangered birds in the U.S., and yet Hawaii remains the only state in our country without a facility such as we are building.

By the end of this month, we will have completed Phase 1 of our construction project; we will have a weatherproof building, the interior framed and ready for completion, and a fully graded and paved site prepped for final landscaping. The windows and sliding glass doors have been installed and were all donated. The metal roofing, siding and gutters are complete along with all exterior painting.

We are pleased to announce that costs have come in an impressive 15 percent under budget; we are exceedingly proud of this fact, and grateful to our design / engineering / construction team for making this happen. I want to invite you to stop by and see the progress in person, and with advanced notice, I will be pleased to give you a guided tour.

We now need to raise just over $450,000 to complete the interior of the building and open the doors. We are deeply grateful for your past generosity, and will appreciate immensely your consideration of an additional gift to help us reach the finish line.

Thank you again for your support.

Mahalo nui loa,

Linda Elliott
President, HWC Board of Directors
