Fire destroys home in Pahala Saturday (April 10)

Fire/rescue crews repsonded to a 2 p.m. alarm for a structure fire at 96-3167 Pikake Street in Ka‘u Saturday (April 10).

Upon arrival crews found a single story home with about half of the structure on fire. The occupant of the home was sitting near the side of the road with first and second degree burns to the right side of their body and back area. The occupant was transported to Ka‘u Hospital via a bystander and was later taken via medic unit to Ka‘u ball field for medivac via Chopper 2.

Bystanders notified firefights of possibly more occupants in the blaze but crews did not find anyone else in the structure which sustained 80% fire damage. The entire 1,000 square-foot structure suffered smoke and water damage and was considered a loss estimated at $140,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
