MEDIA RELEASE
Having Kanani Numata at bat in the sixth inning proved key to the University of Hawaii at Hilo in opening the Mizuno/Tournament of Champions with wins over NCAA Division II West Region teams in Turlock, Calif.
In a 2-1 victory over Humboldt State University, Numata’s sixth-inning single tied the game. She then delivered a sixth-inning two-run double to give the Vulcans a 2-0 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Vulcans improved to 25-10.
Against Humboldt State, the Vulcans managed just four hits but the 8-hit pitching performance of Christina Pedroza kept the game close.
Sarah Weisskopf’s pitching helped the Vulcans through game two as they managed just six hits. Weisskopf gave up just five hits and struck out three without allowing a walk.
Sierra Green tallied two of the Vulcans hits.
