Hurney named Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii executive director

Patrick Hurney has been named executive director of Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii.

Hurney will oversee and direct the volunteer and professional staff in the building of quality homes throughout West Hawaii. Added responsibilities include overseeing Habitat’s ReStore where building supplies and gently used furniture are sold to raise funds for home building, growing and strengthening community relations, marketing efforts and housing development opportunities.

Hurney was most recently the facilities director with the Catholic Charities Hawaii Kawaihae Transitional Housing Program, a 24-unit transitional housing facility located in West Hawaii. Some of Hurney’s day-to-day tasks included assisting families transition into long-term permanent housing, develop necessary skills and education among a long list of duties.

“Having the opportunity to take the lead reins with Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii seems like a natural progression of my prior work,” Hurney said. “I am really excited to get down to the business of building affordable homes here in West Hawaii. Our affiliate has a strong staff that is ready as well.”

Hurney replaces Vicky Dannals who has relocated back to the mainland.

“We are so fortunate to have Pat onboard with our West Hawaii Habitat family,” said Tom Whittemore, Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii Board President. “With Pat’s strong background in working with non-profit organizations, we look forward to building long-lasting relationships within our community while continuing to grow Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii’s mission of building clean, safe affordable housing.”

Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii provides home-ownership opportunities, has a ReStore that sells building supplies and gently used furniture to raise funds for home building, provides volunteers for other non-profit organizations in the community and assists with international home building.

Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii welcomes volunteers who are willing to swing a hammer, pick up a paint brush or who can help in the ReStore.

Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing.

In addition, Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii recently opened to the general public its ReStore, offering a wide variety of new and gently used home improvement products at discounted prices of up to 50-75 percent off retail value. Community donations for Habitat ReStore are always welcome. Proceeds generated through these generous donations help build homes for Habitat families.

ReStore accepts clean furniture, building materials, working appliances, flooring, doors, windows, cabinets, sinks/toilets, lighting, home furnishings, electrical, hardware, and plumbing supplies.
