Honolulu (1/25/10) – At the Neal Blaisdell Center, the HPU women’s basketball team defeated the University of Hawai‘i-Hilo, 65-51. With the win, the Lady Sea Warriors improve to 7-0 and remain alone atop the PacWest Conference. The Vulcans fall to 2-5 in conference and 5-13 overall.
Mana Hopkins led all scorers, dropping 20 points on 7-9 from the floor. Jazzmin Awa-Williams recorded six points, 10 rebounds, and five assists, and Genesis Lewis added nine points and 11 rebounds.
Natalie Mata led the Vulcans with 15 points.
HPU, 11-4 overall, opened an early lead with a game-opening 16-4 run. Leading 22-9 with 9:02 to play in the half, the Sea Warriors allowed UH-Hilo back in the game as their lead was cut to 25-21 by halftime.
The Vulcans took their first lead early in the second half, as Mata hit a three-pointer to give UH-Hilo a 26-25 lead. The Sea Warriors regained control as they went on a 21-3 run to seal the win.
Paris Gravely added 17 points for HPU.
HPU sweeps the season series with UH-Hilo, and remains the lone undefeated team in the PacWest.
The Sea Warriors return to action Saturday, January 30, versus Academy of Art University. Start time at the Neal Blaisdell Center is set for 5:30 p.m.
