County plans to retain Reed’s Bay banyan trees

MEDIA RELEASE

County plans for the Reed’s Bay Park Redevelopment and Restoration project are being re-evaluated in an effort to preserve two large banyan trees that have grown together and now separate the beach park site from the adjacent gravel parking area, said Robert Fitzgerald, director of the County Department of Parks & Recreation.

The County initially planned to remove the trees because they are close to the site for the new comfort station. However, Fitzgerald said it may be possible to trim the trees back and work around them, minimizing any impacts on the planned comfort station.

The $1.7 million Reed’s Bay project involves demolishing and replacing the existing comfort station, which has been closed for years. The project also involves adding a pavilion and picnic tables; replacing sidewalks, curbs and gutters; providing some accessible walkways; and adding a shower and other amenities.

Overhauling the landscaping on the site is also part of the project, including adding grassy areas and replacing some existing trees with shoreline-appropriate native tree species.
