Kealakekua fire update for Sunday (Jan 17)

MEDIA RELEASE

Good afternoon this is Fire Chief Darryl Oliveira with a brush fire update for Sunday January 17 at 4:00 p.m.

The conditions at the Kealakekua Mauka Brush fire in the Kona area continue to improve with the efforts focused on maintaining the perimeter and extinguishing hot spots and occasional flare-ups. In addition to the mop up operations, 2 bull dozers were widening sections of the fire breaks as a precaution with the forecasted wind and weather changes expected over the next several days.

Resources on scene today include 3 brush trucks, 2 tankers, 2 bull dozers, 1 helicopter, and 3 all terrain vehicles. Again the brush fire mop up operations on the Kealakekua Mauka brush fire in the Kona area continued today and personnel will be on scene throughout the night. Personnel from the Hawaii Fire Department, Kamehameha Schools/Bishop Estate, and various private and commercial organizations continue to work on extinguishing hot spots and occasional flare ups.

Although progress is being made the community may continue to experience varying smoke conditions depending upon local wind and weather patterns. Once again I would like to thank everyone for the help and assistance we continue to receive with this incident.
