UH-Hilo students to hold blood drive (Jan. 19)

MEDIA RELEASE

Students from the University of Hawaii at Hilo College of Pharmacy will conduct a blood drive from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 19 in UCB 127 on the UH Hilo campus. The blood drive supports the Blood Bank of Hawaii.

Parking on campus will be free to the first 75 donors from the community who enter the UH-Hilo main gate and inform the guard they’re there to give blood. Others can park on Kawili Street.

“The one pint that you donate will save three lives,” said Cherie Chu, student activities coordinator and third-year student in the College of Pharmacy. “The pain involved is minimal. It hurts less than sticking your finger to check blood glucose. All it takes is an hour of your time.”

The goal is to collect 125 pints of blood. Donors need to be at least 18 years old in generally good health, weigh at least 110 pounds, have blood pressure in the acceptable range of 160/90 to 110/60, and skin should be free of piercing, tattooing or other punctures for one year.
