Kealakekua fire update for Saturday (Jan 16)

MEDIA RELEASE

Good afternoon this is Fire Chief Darryl Oliveira with a brush fire update for Saturday January 16 at 4:00 p.m.

Personnel and resources from the Hawaii Fire Department and Kamehameha Schools/Bishop Estate were on the fire scene of the Kealakekua Mauka brush fire throughout last night and continued operations today.

Very little active burning has been reported and the fire activity has been limited to hot spots, smoldering logs, fallen trees and occasional flare ups. Efforts are being focused on extinguishing these smoldering fires and flare ups to prevent potential embers from being blown outside of the fire containment area.

In addition to the mop up operations the widening of portions of the fire break was also being performed. Resources on scene today include 3 brush trucks, 2 off road wild land vehicles, 1 tanker, 1 helicopter, and 1 bull dozer.

Again, the firefighting efforts on the Kealakekua Mauka brush fire are continuing and crews will be on scene throughout the night and tomorrow.
