Big Island under flood advisory, winter weather advisory for summits

MEDIA RELEASE

This is a Civil Defense message. The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for Hawaii Island Sunday December 20. Light rain is being reported in east Hawaii, however weather conditions still exist that may lead to heavier rain and possible flash flooding. The watch extends through this evening.

* AT 959 AM HST…RADAR SHOWED THUNDERSTORMS PRODUCING HEAVY RAIN ALONG A LINE FROM WAIKOLOA VILLAGE TO 7 MILES NORTHWEST OF KEAHOLE POINT…MOVING SOUTH AT 10 MPH. ADDITIONAL THUNDERSTORMS PRODUCING HEAVY RAIN ARE LOCATED ALONG A LINE FROM KAILUA-KONA TO MILOLII… MOVING EAST AT AT 5 MPH.
* OTHER LOCATIONS IN THE ADVISORY INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO WAIKII…PUUANAHULU…KAILUA-KONA…HOLUALOA…KEAUHOU… KEALAKEKUA…CAPTAIN COOK…HONAUNAU AND MILOLII.

DO NOT CROSS FAST FLOWING OR RISING WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE OR ON FOOT. TURN AROUND…DON/T DROWN.

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH IS ALSO IN EFFECT UNTIL 600 PM HST.

SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS OF UP TO 5 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE TODAY.
