Hundreds of gallons of sewage spilled in Hilo

MEDIA RELEASE

An estimated 300 gallons of sewage leaked into the storm drain system near Ponahawai Street and Kilauea Avenue Friday morning, according to the County Department of Environmental Management’s Wastewater Division.

The infiltration of wastewater at about 9 a.m. into the storm drain system that discharges into Alenaio Stream prompted the department to post warning signs along the stream canal.

The department sealed the sewage leak and disinfected the storm drain system, and has made plans to abandon the sewer main that leaked to prevent a re-occurrence.
