UPDATED 10 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 8

Saddle Road was reopened shortly before 6 p.m., nearly five hours after a two-vehicle crash shut down one lane.

Civil Defense Chief Quince Mento, attending a meeting Kona, said the road had to be restricted to one lane because the truck involved in the crash tipped over into a gulch. It was filled with used cooking grease, some of which spilled.

A crane was needed to right the truck and drag it out of the gluch, Mento said, and crews cleaned up the debris and spilled grease.

Mento said injuries were reported and, although he did not have details, he did not believe they were life-threatening.
