Fire/rescue units responded to a 12:46 p.m. alarm Friday (Nov 27) for three missing hikers in the Kahaualea Natural Area Reserve in Volcano. Three Kailua-Kona men, 50, 58 and 64 years-old, were lost in a heavily forested area.

The men started a midmorning hike when it was bright and clear then conditions changed two miles into their hike with cold misty rain and fog making for poor visibility. The hikers were disoriented in the rain forest of large Hapu ferns and old growth Ohia trees and called 911.

High surf advisory now in effect until 6 am HST Sunday...

Surf along east facing shores will increase to heights of 6 to 8 feet this morning. This large surf is expected to continue through Saturday night.

A high surf advisory means that large breaking waves and dangerous rip currents will affect beaches in the advisory area.

The Hawai'i Police Department is asking for the public's help in locating a 49-year-old woman wanted for abuse of a family/household member, criminal property damage and violating a court order.

Myrna Theresa Thomas is described as part Hawaiian, 5-foot-5, about 140 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. She has no permanent address but is known to frequent the Ali'i Drive area of Kona.

Roadwork on Palani Road in North Kona begins Nov. 30 and will continue through Dec. 14.

From Nov. 30 to Dec. 4, Bolton Inc., will resurface and widen Palani Road near Grace Community Church.  Night roadwork hours are 8 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.  Off-duty officers will direct traffic and motorists should expect delays. Future night roadwork is planned for later to install a turn lane.

During the week of Dec. 7-14, Bolton personnel will work on a water system for Grace Community Church. Traffic is not affected.

The summit road has been opened to the public. The dusting of snow from last night has melted. 

This announcement is primarily used to inform the public about road closures that typically occur during the winter months due to ice or snow on the road and occasionally for high wind situations. 

There are very few road closures from April 1 through November 30, and this message will not be updated during this time period unless unusual circumstances develop.

The Motor Vehicle Registration and Driver’s License Sections that were temporarily closed throughout the County of Hawai‘i earlier this week are now open. A problem with a fiber optic cable linking the County to state offices on Oahu has been resolved. Mahalo nui to everyone for their patience and cooperation during the temporary outage.
